Hall of David - Palazzo Lateranense

Hall of David

The room takes its name from the gilded stuccoes in which the vault is divided, presenting five episodes from the life of King David, from whose lineage Joseph, the putative father of Jesus, is descended. In the four corners of the room are the heraldic coats of arms of Pope Sixtus V, flanked by pairs of female allegorical figures, among whom we can identify Concordia, Piety, Temperance, Prudence, Justice and Fortitude. In the figure of King David, we are reminded that the Lord chooses his collaborators, and the Pope among them, not on the strength of human ability but on the attitude of the hearts that trust in him.
